National Catholic Reporter's James Carroll, has written a comprehensive but provocative article in the June 9th issue which describes why progressives in the Church believe that priestly celibacy is a major reason why the Church is experiencing its present problems.

Mr. Carroll is too biased to do the issue justice. For example, celibacy is positively recommended by both Jesus and St. Paul in the New Testament. Mr Carroll never mentions this, so his article is not a serious treatment of the issue of celibacy.
I agree lifelong vowed celibacy can and has been destructive in many people's lives but that does not mean that their is no value in people making vows of celibacy to dedicate themselves to the work of the gospel. ( I think that they need not and should not be life long. I also think it appropriate to restrict certain ministries to those who are under such a vow.) It seems that this was clearly intended by Jesus and his apostles. "we have left everything to follow you..." Mr. Carroll only wants to demonize celibacy and in doing so has placed himself in opposition to the teaching of Jesus.
Mr. Carroll is a fallen away priest, believes the Church is built on anti-semitism and buys into the debunked myth that Pius XII aided Hitler. Yes, a blind squirrel can find a nut but more often than not, he doesn't. No exception here for Mr. Carroll.

What did you mean about restricting certain ministries to those who are under such a vow? An example?
An article full of contempt, insults, and loathing for our Church. Sadly, this is what passes for thought in some circles.
Why doesn't the Catholic Virginian have a blog similar to the Virginian Pilot online? Oh. That's right. The bishop believes that people who use 21st century technological means of communication such as blogs are "fragile" people. Maybe are next bishop won't be as fragile when it comes to technology.
