A different perspective ~ sexual abuse and clerical celibacy

Another good NCR article on the recent abuse scandal in Germany and Ireland. This one by Hans Küng - Ratzinger's Responsibility. Whether you like the National Catholic Reporter or not, it contains many hard-hitting articles that will cause you to think out of the box... and hopefully broaden your understanding of the issues.

I do not understand why people go to the Church when a priest molests their son. Why don't people just call the police? Wouldn't that be a faster way to protect future victims than relying on a system that covers up these crimes? Rather than waiting 20 years to come back and get a financial reward for a crime that took place 20 years earlier and HUNDREDS of victims later, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CALL THE POLICE FOR THE SAKE OF FUTURE VICTIMS AND STOP PLAYING A NO-WIN SYSTEM even if it produces financial compensation. CALL THE POLICE!

I believe the children who are molested are afraid to say anything to their parents; either because the molester threatens them or the children are convinced that THEY are the ones who have done wrong.

Yes, it would be so much easier if the police were called immediately; rather than the church officials

Delays in reporting these sex crimes results in a trivialization of the crime, a loss of credibility over time and MORE future victims. How can a person in good conscience know of a molester working with children and allow this to go on for years without saying a word? Call the police. Let law enforcement handle crimes and let our church officials handle our spirituality. When you have one of those priests-can-do-no-wrong-kiss-up-to-the-clergy Catholics who would rather go to the clergy instead of law enforcement, church officials should report all accusations to law enforcement immediately. For the sake of other potential future victims! This outrages me that victims are being pulled into perpetuating these crimes through silence. Think of other children too!

Not to change the topic.....but....Is Catherine Combier-Donovan ever going to answer the questions posed about the tabernacle? It just seems strange that she never got back to us, not even to tell us that she will not answer our questions. It really doesn't give a lot of credibility to diocesan officials when they assure us that they are willing to converse with us and answer our questions; then, really end up ignoring us. This speaks volumes about the lack of common courtesy that exists at the top. In the secular culture, this lack of common courtesy would never be tolerated. Snubbing the Catholics of this diocese is not praisworthy. Please answer our questions about the tabernacle that were posted months ago.
